Picture Book Illustration

Sandra Morris has designed this Picture Book Illustration course for aspiring author/illustrators to build expertise and skills in character development, storyboarding and illustration technique. This hands-on, informative course is broken down into three parts, each part is designed to take students through the process of developing and illustrating a picture book. Whether you are a beginner with a big idea or a seasoned illustrator looking for inspiration and support, this course encourages students to take their illustrations from concept to submission.

Character Development  

Learn techniques to create and develop your very own storybook characters. Suitable for those with basic drawing ability.

The course will cover:Story Books
• an introduction to picture books — What makes a successful picture book?
• character mapping
• learn drawing techniques that bring your character to life
• develop more dynamic character drawings through making a 3D model


Storyboarding: Part 1

Learn the process of illustrating, and developing a picture book. Explore ways in which relationships of image and text can enhance the story, and discover sequencing techniques to improve the pace, rhythm and flow of your book. Suitable for those with basic drawing ability.

Story Books

The course will cover:
• an overview — tricks of the trade
• pagination, using text and image relationships to your advantage
• sequencing techniques, to improve your story's  pace, rhythm and flow


Storyboarding: Part 2

Following on from Part 1, design, illustrate and then make a mock-up picture book of your story. Learn the principles of page design, the balance of image and text and guiding the eye across the page. Continue with character development and drawing techniques that will have your characters running and leaping from the page!

The course will cover:
• techniques to make your composition more dynamic
• the principles of page layout and design
• bringing your characters to life


Illustration Techniques - Part 1

Experiment with a range of illustration techniques using graphite, pen and colour pencils. Create a knowledge bank of skills to continue with your illustration projects. This is an opportunity to develop skills and discover new techniques to enhance your work.

Story Books

The course will cover:
• graphite and other soft pencils useful for outlines
• techniques using ink  —  various pens, sticks and wash techniques
• various colour pencil techniques


Illustration Techniques - Part 2

Following on from Illustration Techniques Part 1, we continue to experiment with illustration techniques, this time concentrating on watercolour. Using your chosen technique, illustrate a final artwork for your story. To conclude our programme, we offer advice on pitching your story to publishers.

The course will cover:
• watercolour techniques
• creating a final artwork
• tips on how to approach a publisher
